Website or just Instagram? What your business actually needs
Instagram helps people find you, but is it enough? What social media does well, what you don't control on a platform, and what a website adds to a business.
Plenty of businesses in Kosovo and Albania got started on Instagram, and for good reason: it's free, it's quick, and customers are already there. Sooner or later, though, the question comes up: is a website worth it, or is a social media profile enough? There is no single answer for everyone, but there are a few things worth knowing before you decide.
What social media is good at
Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are powerful tools. They are great for:
- Showing your work every day through photos and video.
- Staying close to customers through comments and messages.
- Announcing offers, new products or changes to your opening hours quickly.
- Reaching people who don't know you yet, through shares and paid ads.
For many businesses, this is where the relationship with a customer begins, and that doesn't change once you have a website.
What you don't control on a platform
The catch is that a social media profile never fully belongs to you. You build the audience, but the platform sets the rules:
- The algorithm: the platform decides who sees your posts and when, and those rules change without warning.
- Reach: even your own followers don't always see what you post unless you pay to promote it.
- Your account: it can be suspended, hacked or shut down by mistake, and getting it back isn't up to you.
- The format: you work within whatever the platform offers, not what your business actually needs.
None of this makes social media a bad choice. It simply means your whole online presence shouldn't hang on a single place you don't control.
What a website adds
A website is the one space online that you control. Here is what it brings:
- Visibility on Google: when someone searches for what you offer in their city, a well-built site has a chance to show up in the results, with the information you choose.
- Trust: many customers look up a business's website before they buy, book or sign anything. A tidy, up-to-date site signals that the business is serious.
- Your own domain and email: an address like info@yourbusiness.com looks more professional than a free one, and it belongs to you.
- Bookings and orders: customers can book an appointment, place an order or pay online without waiting for a reply to their message.
- Information that's easy to find: opening hours, address, prices, menu or services live in one place instead of getting lost between posts.
The best setup: both, working together
For most businesses, the real question isn't website or Instagram, but how to make the two work together. Social media gets attention and keeps up the day-to-day contact. The website is where people find the full picture and where things actually happen: a booking, an order, a request for a quote.
Social media is the shop window you redecorate every day. Your website is the shop you own.
In practice, that means the link in your bio points to your website, your website links back to your profiles, and the basics, such as opening hours, address and phone number, match everywhere.
If you're just starting out and the budget is tight, a simple site can be enough for now. Our Start package, for example, is a one-page presentation website from €450. You can expand it later, when the business calls for it.
How to decide
Ask yourself:
- Do customers look on Google when they need what I offer?
- Do I lose time answering the same questions in my messages?
- Would online bookings or orders help me?
- What happens if my account gets blocked tomorrow?
If any of these questions gives you pause, it may be time for a website.
